Lowerhouse Wesleyan Chapel
The Wesleyan Methodist church was formed in the 18th century from religous societies founded by John Wesley and his preachers. It suffered many secessions,
but was the largest Nonconformist denomination in the 19th century.
Methodism in the Lowerhouse area dates back to 1798, and services were conducted in a cottage opposite Victoria Terrace.
When the Dugdale family purchased the estate they built a room adjoining the mill where services were held. The first purpose built chapel was built on land donated
by the Dugdales in 1877 which was completed before 1891. However it was later felt that the building would be better used as a school, so a new chapel was commisioned.
The new chapel pictured below was opened in June 1898, which later had its name changed to 'Greenbrook Methodist Church' and moved to new premises in 1985.
Lowerhouse Junior School below built in 1876 on land donated by the Dugdales, provided a new learning facility for the local community. It also became a well used social centre for many different types of events including, entertainment, political meetings, and social gatherings for different groups and local society's.
