Lowerhouse Canteen Working Mens Club Band
William George Tregilgas (behind the young boy in the front row below), was the original leader of the band. The Lowerhous Mills Silver Prize Band, formed as
an ofshoot of the Briercliffe Brass Band as they appear in the same uniform and with the same instruments. His son Mr Fred Tregilgas was also a member of the
band. Duing the ten years existence of the band, it competed at the Crystal Palace in addition to various music festivals across Lancashire. There is still
in existence on display a cup and several certificates as proof of the bands prowess.
Apparently in 1912 Wilfred George was asked to play on the Titanic on the launch of its legendary maiden voyage, but his wife Lillian made a fuss, and he subsequently declined.
James Henry, being the oldest of the musician brothers became bandmaster of the Briercliffe Brass Band where he stayed for many years. Eustace joined the Burnley Temperance band and began to move up the ranks from there. Wifred George became the first bandmaster for the Lowerhouse Mills Band when they formed as an offshoot of the Briercliffe Brass Band. Herbert Stanley continued to play in the local bands.
Mr Fred Tregilgas (below), was the son of the first bandmaster of Lowerhouse Mills Brass Band, Mr W. G. Tregilgas,
both being part of a of
a well renowned and popular musical family.
